About radio
Black Cat Radio is a British community radio station based in St Neots. The station was conceived by Tony Gillham, a professional broadcaster with over three decades of experience, including stints at the BBC and local radio. The idea was to create a community-driven radio station, and with the help of a team of dedicated volunteers, Black Cat Radio Ltd, a not-for-profit company, was established. The station quickly became recognized as the voice of St Neots. In 2015, the radio station's hard work was rewarded when Ofcom granted Black Cat Radio Ltd a full-time FM licence. The station then rebranded and launched on 107FM on 17th April 2017. Following its success on FM, Black Cat Radio Ltd was awarded a licence to transmit on DAB+ in Cambridge in 2018. On 3rd June 2019, in response to the rise of digital listening, especially via smart speakers, the station rebranded to Black Cat Radio.
Listeners can contact Black Cat Radio in several ways. For music dedications or shout-outs during shows, listeners can use the station's smartphone app or send an email. For urgent travel information, listeners can send a text. For general topics or to express interest in joining the volunteer team, there are dedicated email addresses. Black Cat Radio is funded by advertisers, sponsors, and volunteers, and any surplus revenue is invested back into the station to develop their community service.
However, please note that my search also found another entity called Black Cat Radio, which is an unlicensed radio station that began broadcasting in August 2008. This station, owned by the Global Nation of Humanity, was originally broadcasting from an offshore position in the North Sea, using the ship Ross Revenge, but moved to onshore broadcasting on Treasure Island in 2010. They broadcast music and anarchist and arts-related programming, primarily alternative, electronic, dance, and indie music from independent and breakthrough artists. The station also broadcasts interviews, live sets, special editorials, and investigative documentaries in partnership with Black Cat News. This station has a set of DJs and a schedule for both weekdays and weekends.
