DemonFM is an award-winning online radio station based at De Montfort University in Leicester, England. The station was founded in 1995 as a society within the De Montfort Students’ Union by the Communications Officer of the time, Rob Martin. From its early days of broadcasting on local FM radio under Restricted Service Licences, DemonFM transitioned to a community radio licence in 2009, which allowed it to broadcast on 107.5 FM 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. However, in 2019, the management decided not to apply for a second extension of its community radio licence, aiming to focus solely on providing an experience for De Montfort University Students.
Now, DemonFM broadcasts from 8 AM to midnight during term time, serving young people living and studying in Leicester. Its online platform provides a variety of programming, from talk and music shows to news and journalism programs, and it caters to a broad range of music genres. The station operates from the Creative Technology Studios within De Montfort University's 'Queens Building', and it is part of De Montfort Students' Union's Demon Media Group, which also includes The Demon magazine and Demon TV.
The station is run by a team of volunteer students, who work in various roles including presentation and production of shows, live events programming, news and current affairs production, technical assistance and station management. This offers a great opportunity for those interested in broadcasting and provides a stepping stone to the radio industry.
DemonFM has won national recognition at the annual Student Radio Awards, including the Best Student Station award in 2001. The station has also served as a launchpad for many of its members to embark on careers in the radio and audio industries.
