About radio
Purple Radio is Durham University's award-winning radio station, broadcasting live and online 24/7 during term time. Established in 1995, the station provides a diverse mix of popular shows to keep listeners entertained and informed. You can listen to your favorite live shows, check when they're next on air, or even get involved in radio production if you're a student.
The radio station has a rich history. Initially known as Purple FM, the station was launched in 1996 from various locations within Durham University, including Dunelm House and the College of St Hild and St Bede. With a pioneering use of outside broadcast equipment, Purple FM could send transmissions from remote locations to the studio. In 2000, the station was simulcast over the internet for the first time, marking its digital footprint.
In 2002, the station moved to Durham Students Union to make it more accessible to students from all parts of the university. In 2004, the station rebranded itself as Purple Radio to launch a 24-hour internet service via its website. Since 2006, Purple Radio has been broadcasting 24 hours a day during term time, except in exceptional circumstances.
In 2016, Purple Radio underwent a complete overhaul, introducing a new logo, website, and the introduction of Purple Radio on Demand. This initiative expanded its office and initiated plans for a second permanent studio. The 'Videotape' series has featured interviews with notable figures, including Gabby Logan, Peter Hitchens, and Dehenna Davison2. The station has also been recognized with various Student Radio Awards and I Love Student Radio Awards.
