About radio
Hallam FM, based in Sheffield, England, is a prominent Independent Local Radio station that is part of the Hits Radio network and owned by Bauer. With a weekly audience of 301,000 listeners as of March 2023, the station broadcasts to South Yorkshire and beyond, offering listeners a blend of the biggest hits and throwbacks.
The station began its journey on 1st October 1974, broadcasting under the name of Radio Hallam from its studios at Hartshead in Sheffield City Centre. The first presenter on air was ex-BBC Radio 1 DJ Johnny Moran, who played "I've Got the Music in Me" by Kiki Dee as the first record. In 1985, Radio Hallam's broadcast area significantly increased as it began to broadcast to all of South Yorkshire. It eventually merged with neighbouring Yorkshire stations Pennine Radio and Viking Radio in 1987 to form the now-defunct Yorkshire Radio Network.
Over the years, Hallam FM has adapted to changes in the industry and audience needs. Its frequencies were changed during the 1980s to cater to different parts of South Yorkshire, and its studios moved to 900 Herries Road, close to Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground. As the Metro Radio Group was bought by EMAP, Hallam FM became part of the Big City Network in Northern England. As of October 2019, Hallam FM's Sheffield studios are shared with sister Yorkshire station Viking FM.
Hallam FM's main competitors are BBC Radio 1, Capital Yorkshire & Heart Yorkshire, among others. The station broadcasts on analogue frequencies on 97.4 FM, 103.4 FM, and 102.9 FM in Sheffield, Doncaster, and Barnsley respectively. In addition to traditional broadcasting, Hallam FM also broadcasts via DAB on the Bauer Radio multiplex, and listeners can tune in online and via their app.
