About radio
Red Kite Radio is a vibrant community radio station that serves Thame, Haddenham, and the surrounding villages. The station has been broadcasting online and live since June 2017, offering a mix of classic hits from the 60s to today, alongside news and information.
The station operates from the grounds of Haddenham Garden Centre and is a not-for-profit organisation, funded by advertising, sponsorships, and grants from supporting organisations. Red Kite Radio started as a pop-up station, broadcasting for two weeks a year to celebrate the Haddenham Beer Festival. After four successful years, and with strong support from the local community, the station secured a full-time community radio license, allowing it to expand its reach and focus on the wider community in Thame, Haddenham, and beyond.
The station's team consists of a diverse mix of individuals from various backgrounds, ranging from young to old, all sharing a passion for radio and a broad knowledge of music. They freely give their time to present shows, read the news, and provide technical support. In recognition of their tremendous work, the UK's broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, has extended Red Kite Radio's license for another five years, enabling it to continue broadcasting until June 2027.
Red Kite Radio is committed to serving its community, with its coverage area defined in the Ofcom map of 19th May 2017 spanning over 50 villages in Buckinghamshire and South Oxfordshire, reaching a population of approximately 49,000 people2. The station offers a wide variety of specialist music programmes to cater to diverse musical tastes. It also provides training for those interested in becoming presenters, training them in the studio to operate the desk and control the playlist system.
