About radio
Nevis Radio is a community radio station based in Fort William, Scotland that serves the communities of Fort William and the surrounding region of Lochaber. This includes areas such as Fort Augustus, Mallaig, Glen Coe, Kinlochleven, and parts of the Isle of Skye. The station has been broadcasting since 1992, initially under different names such as Ski FM and Holiday FM, providing information about skiing conditions and holiday entertainment respectively. It was in 1994 that the station was awarded a full-time license and began operating year-round as Nevis Radio.
The station's mission is to entertain its listeners, with a strong focus on serving its local community. It also has a strong educational component, having established relationships with the local high schools in Lochaber and offering students the opportunity to gain broadcasting experience and accreditation in DJing and production.
Nevis Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a mix of original local programming and automated repeats and music services. During the day, the station provides local news, traffic, and travel updates, as well as a national news service from Sky News. The station also covers local events, including the Scottish Six Days Trial, UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, Highland Games, and more. It's also worth mentioning that Nevis Radio operates with a staff largely made up of volunteers, with only one member, Simon Abberley, receiving remuneration for his role as a presenter.
